The Batu Caves – North of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Hindu deity, Murugan
Long-tailed Macaques at the Batu Caves

We shower, rest, get some lunch and take an hour bus ride outside the city to the Batu Caves. The Batu Caves is a Hindu temple located in a limestone cave and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur. To get to the temple caves we had to pass dozens of monkeys as we climbed the 272 steps to the entrance of the caves. At first, it’s an incredible experience to see the monkeys up-close and personal, even fun but then it gets a little frightening because they are so close and there are so many. The long-tailed macaques like to eat fruit, seeds, leaves, flowers, and bark but the ones at this temple rely on the tourists for food and can get aggressive. They even steal food from some tourists. Now I’m staying as far away as I can from these cute little critters.

Outside the cave is the world’s tallest statue of the Hindu deity, Murugan. Standing 140’, made out of steel bars, concrete and painted gold.

It’s a hot, humid, sunny day with a lot of people climbing the steps to the cave. After climbing the 272 steps we enter the largest cavern called Temple Cave with the ceiling over 300 feet high and several Hindu shrines inside. Is it cooler in here? I can’t tell.

Han Christian Anderson said, "To travel is to live." I know I did a lot of living before I started traveling but traveling is thrilling. I learned more about myself, it opened my eyes and heart that staying at home couldn't do. I'm stronger, more aware and more grateful for the life I have. ~ "The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever." Psalm 121:8
